Skull was a young woman’s A human skull found by two fishermen in March has been examined and found to be from a Polynesian woman, most likely from before European settlement of Nelson. Mackenzie Rose and her partner found the skull on the edge of the Waimea Estuary, behind Nelson Airport, when they went to go fishing. They called the police, who sent the skull, along with some other bone fragments, to Otago University to be examined. Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn says the results are back and show the remains were found to be from a Polynesian woman, believed to have been under 30 years of age. “We are now making arrangements for them to be returned to a site dedicated for koiwi at Marsden Valley Cemetery.”

It was a top performance by Henry who consistently posted 15 minute laps in his first race since breaking his collarbone eight weeks ago. However, one of the most impressive performances of the day came from Warrick’s 76-year-old mother Jill Charlton, who teamed up with her husband Tony, 70, to ride six laps.

‘Semi-submersible’ boat coming to Nelson The Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle is reaching new depths, announcing that new semisubmersible vessel will be joining its fleet in spring. Nicknamed “Mollymawk,” the 17.8 metre long vessel is described as a “state of the art semi-submersible which allows people of all ages and abilities to explore the undersea worlds”. It will be working in the Tonga Island marine reserve in the Abel Tasman National Park, and will enable passengers to explore through the kelp beds and habitats of the marine eco-system. Nelson City Council is making a raft of decisions on Nelson’s top issues, including parking in the CBD, and it recently discussed plans to reopen the Trafalgar Centre and what to do with Rocks Rd.
Free parking: On Thursday, the council will decide what it will do about the parking situation in Nelson. Ideas on the table include free parking for a limited time in the city, or free parking for three hours in the Buxton, Montgomery and Wakatu car parks. Keep an eye on the Nelson Weekly website on Thursday for an update. Rocks Rd will get its walkway: Last week Nelson Weekly reported local MP Nick Smith’s opposition to the council building a walking cycleway along Rocks Rd, but it has had little impact on councillors. A national training seminar will bring together the largest gathering of community patrollers in the country this weekend. Close to 275 people are expected to attend the event, which includes a training day at Nelson College for Girls, and speeches, AGM and a dinner at the Nelson Suburban Club. There are 150 community patrols in New Zealand, and one region steps up to host a national training seminar each year, which enables members from all community patrols to make sure they are working in a similar fashion.

Dulcie celebrates 100th birthday There was always a good chance that Dulcie Liesnham would live a long and happy life after maintaining a healthy, active life style and being blessed with good genes. And that’s exactly what has happened, with Dulcie celebrating her 100th birthday with a sing-along and a glass of sherry with family and friends at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke last Thursday. Dulcie, who is still sharp as a tack, attributes her longevity to her mother Lucy’s genes and a lifetime of good living. Lucy lived to 102 while Dulcie has always maintained a healthy lifestyle, working hard to bring up her three children and spending countless hours in the garden. “She was always an amazing gardener,” Dulcie’s daughter, Judith Wilkinson says. “My parents would spend hours in the garden and everywhere they lived, their garden was always something special - people would see their garden and gasp it was so beautiful.” Dulcie has also often enjoyed a “wee sherry” while relaxing at the end of a hard day, although she said with a smile “don’t you dare say that though”. Dulcie was born in Milton in South Otago and raised on the family farm at Five Rivers in northern Southland before attending Columba College in Dunedin. She married her late husband Tom and had three children, moving to Otapiri near Winton, Bluff and then lastly, when their children left home, to the Nelson region. Tom and Dulcie had a farm at Stanley Brook and then lived in Motueka, before Dulcie moved to Richmond to be closer to Judith when Tom passed away. Now she lives in the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. Dulcie has 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

And while the Theatre Royal in Nelson might not be the most glamorous venue they’ve performed in this year, the two former Garin College students were super-excited to be back home, performing in front of many of the people who have helped them over the years. “We’ve had support from Nelson even since before we started playing music — way before Broods,” says Georgia. “So it’s cool to come back and be part of it again. Good company, beer and old records for sale The Freehouse will be a hotbed of serious music debate this Saturday with the first record fair to be held at the city pub. Organiser Grant Smithies is hoping the record fair will become a regular event, with local music enthusiasts coming along to swap, sell and buy “interesting” records while enjoying a beer and “arguing” about good music. “Often with record fairs, you have to spend hours wading through old records to find anything decent. So I thought it’d be great

if there was a forum where locals who have plenty of records that they’d like to sell or swap, could come together. And do it in a place where you can get a decent beer and on a weekend afternoon, arguing about music and trying to find a few gems.” The fair is close to being full of stalls with people coming from as far away as Timaru. Drivers see red over mistimed lights Richmond drivers are seeing red as a result of a computer glitch that is disrupting the timing of the traffic lights on Gladstone Rd and the Richmond Deviation. Tasman District Council transportation engineer Gary Clark, said that the New Zealand Transport Agency changed the software controlling the lights and it is creating longer waits for many drivers. He says the main problem is that lights are changing too quickly, frustrating drivers turning from Queen St and Oxford St onto Gladstone Rd. “The lights have got out of sequence and they need to be tweaked,” Gary says. “I think NZTA had a purge of the computer systems and it changed the timing, so I’ll be asking them to have a look at that.” NZTA regional performance manager for the central region, Mark Owens, confirmed on Monday that there has been a problem with the lights caused by new software they installed to modify the timing. He says the software was designed to give more time for crossing pedestrians and right-turning trucks at the intersections, but it contained some “problems” that are disrupting the flow of traffic. Mark says NZTA are investigating the problem and hope to have it fixed “in the next few days.” Gary says they will also be talking to NZTA about changing the lights so that drivers are permitted to make a left turn into Queen St from the Richmond Deviation. The left turn was prohibited when the lights were installed at the McGlashen Ave intersection. “The main problem is drivers who are unfamiliar with the roads’ layout. They are missing the turnoff into McGlashen Ave and they need an alternative left turn into Richmond.”

The ground floor of the new two-storey building on Oxford St is the headquarters for the region’s civil defence and will be used as the operations centre during emergencies. It has been especially designed to “importance level four”, which means it can withstand “a really strong earthquake”, making it the strongest building “north of Christchurch. “It’s critical that the building remains functional after a strong earthquake so it’s got lots of steel reinforcing and an emergency generator and a 5000 litre water tank,” Nelson-Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Group manager Roger Ball says. “It will be used for monitoring events and, if the emergency ramps up, then we start bringing people in.” Roger says the operations centre has already had a test run when it was used during the Easter storm and the facility passed with flying colours. They had between eight and 15 staff in the centre at various stages during the storm and
“everything ran smoothly.” Although the building is constructed to cuttingedge specifications, Roger says the centre uses surprisingly simple technology so that “anyone who comes in can use it”. “It’s got to be familiar and easy, so it’s just PCs and projectors and radios,” Roger says. Nelson-Tasman Civil Defence group controller, Jim Frater, says they had previously operated out of the Nelson City and Tasman District council chambers in Nelson and Richmond. However, a national Civil Defence review highlighted the need for the region to have a dedicated operations centre and Jim says the new facility is not only safer but also far more user-friendly. “When we had to share the council chambers we’d have to move everybody out of the chamber whenever there was an emergency,” Jim says. “Now we can just go straight to the centre and get on with our job.” Jim says the Nelson City and Tasman District councils each provided $150,000 to fit-out the building and will each pay about $50,000 a year for rental.

Nelson athletes came away with a record 27 medals at the last New Zealand Track and Field Championship, but how many can they possibly get when there will be no track to run on in the two months leading up to the next event? Athletics Nelson is set to be the big loser when the Cricket World Cup comes to town this summer. Cricket World Cup will have exclusive access to Saxton Oval – including the athletics track next door – from January 26 right through until March 15. That is 21 days before the first match and another ten days after the final one. That means that during the heart of the athletics season, local athletes may be forced to train and compete on grass somewhere else, making all performance times and records void – hardly the best preparation ahead of the national championship at the end of March. It's a ridiculous situation where a big event comes to town and forces local athletics off an area that has been paid for by local ratepayers. Nelson City Council shouldn't have let it happen and the Cricket World Cup organisers need to allow more flexibility around the usage of the track. Say, an exclusive period of, perhaps, three days before each game and one day after, or by cutting the 21 days before the first match and ten days after the last one. The most compelling reason is the fact no one is yet to give an answer as to what the track will actually be used for during that period. There are only three games and each lasts just six hours – the period they’ve booked the track for is 49 days. During last summer’s ODI between the Black Caps and West Indies, the inside of
the athletics track was used for an activities area, there were also food stalls and toilets, and the pavilion and changing rooms were used by teams and officials. But what activity occurs on the track itself that requires exclusive use for 49 days? The cricket oval is next door! Athletics Nelson only need access to the track, their gear, the timing room and, at worse, a portaloo to replace the changing rooms. Most athletes train between 3pm and 7pm, and local meets generally last just a couple of hours, and occur about twice every three weeks. Julian Matthews will be competing in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Last summer he returned to Nelson where he trained ahead of the national championship, which he finished second in. Is a Commonwealth Games runner going to come back to his home town for training if he can’t get the proper preparation he needs? The same goes for other New Zealand athletes including shot putter Dale Pritchard who is off to compete at the Oceania Championship this week, and 400m champion Alex Jordan. On average, each year at least one Nelson athlete secures a US scholarship, which lifts a huge financial burden on that individual and enables them to a top education with top coaching. Those scholarships are secured based on their times and results. If there are no competitions, and no official times, will the athlete miss out? NCC confirmed that mayor Rachel Reese will be working with the athletics trust and Cricket World Cup to see if there will be some flexibility, let’s just hope they play ball.

Some of you may have seen an item on Campbell Live last week looking at the behaviour of patrons in and around Nelson's inner city bars. The story came about after an item based around Auckland bars a few weeks earlier, which showed a situation that would have been all-too-familiar to Nelsonians a few years back. As area commander, I'm pleased and relieved to see how far we have come in moderating the sort of drunken violence that had, unfortunately, become a regular feature of Friday and Saturday nights out in Nelson. Police always said that we couldn't change people's behaviour on our own. Working in isolation, the best we could hope to do was to be on the spot in time to minimise the damage and catch the offenders. That's simply not good enough as it allows the problem behaviour to continue. I said some time back that finding a solution to the situation would require the support of the wider community and that's where we've made real gains. In Nelson, the hospitality industry, police, the council, DHB and ACC have all worked together to find solutions to a problem we all share in one way or another. As a result of that collaborative work, we have initiatives like mellow yellow and an accord that will see a patron who misbehaves in one bar being trespassed from all inner city bars. I would never be so bold as to suggest we have the problem beat. However, police officers on the street are definitely seeing less breaches of the liquor ban, less serious violence and less victimisation. We can never take our foot off the pedal with this and police are committed to ensuring we have a highly visible presence in and around the city's bars. We are also committed to fostering the relationships we have with bar owners and their staff, to ensure everyone is meeting the expectations of host responsibility under the liquor licensing rules. As the TV item showed, some of the Nelson initiatives are clearly working and that's something we can all take heart from.
Technology - The Choice is yours . . .
Anyone who has had an active relationship with their bank over the past 20-30 years will be able to tell you that things have certainly changed through the years. The biggest change, one could argue, has been an increase in the use of technology by Banks. The introduction of electronic and internet banking has allowed banks to shift from face to face customer interaction, via a high concentration of ‘bricks and mortar’ branches, to centralised call centres, use of computers, and other hand held devices. Technology has also made banking far more convenient, with the many consumers seldom visiting their local branch. An increasing number of clients have chosen to conduct their banking business via the internet or telephone. Banks have embraced new technology as a way to provide convenience for customers, with an additional benefit being a saving on costs as the electronic networks are cheap and efficient. In addition to keeping pace with the latest technology improvements in banking for our customers, NBS recognises that many of customers like to receive face-to-face service from local banking staff who know and understand their needs. According to NBS General Manager Ken Beams, the role of the traditional Branch Manager, who manages the total operation of their office is the best model for our customers and staff. “We are seeing the bigger banks centralise lending functions with the Branch Manager having reduced authority to make decisions. We think Branch Managers need to have a certain level of autonomy to provide the best customer experience”, he added. NBS excels at providing services to small to medium sized businesses, who require regular contact and interaction with bank staff. “The growth of business banking customers has been significant for us in recent years” said Branch Manager Peter Havill of NBS Nelson Branch. “One of the key reasons business owners leave their existing bank is due to a change in relationship or not being able to get a decision”, he said. Getting up close and personal to the hottest motocross action has never been easier than this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, the region’s top riders will compete for glory in the Speight’s Ale House Nelson Flat Track Champs in Brightwater. The annual event will see trophies up for grabs and plenty of action on the track. Up to 150 riders are expected to take part and spectator viewing is rarely so good, with a slight hill meaning great views for those who come along to
watch the racing. Food stalls and a fenced off track mean there’s plenty to see and do and all safely, which means the kids can have a ball too. “The beauty of this track is that you can see the whole track from the one spot and we’ll have a commentator on a cherry picker,” says co-organiser Dan Shallcrass. The two trophies up for grabs are the Leith McConchie Memorial Trophy, which will go to the first Nelson rider home in the senior feature race on Sunday afternoon, and the Keith Sinclair trophy is going to the highest point-scoring senior for the weekend. It will be the first time that this trophy has been competed for since 1967. Flat track racing is extremely popular for riders and spectators, says Dan, with strong numbers in both the junior and ladies sections. “It’s going to be bar-to-bar, fast racing. The great thing with flat tracks is that it’s really close racing and you get a lot of riders banging into each other.” The champs, organised by Sam Millson and Dan, are at Mt Heslington Road. It will be signposted from the Brightwater Motor Inn. Riders wanting to take part can still register at www.nmcc.org.nz. If wet, the champs will be held on July 12 and 13. Galbraith Nelson can still reach the semi-finals, but their fate is now in the hands of Wanderers and Kahurangi. After being smoked 59-0 by Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers on their own club day at Trafalgar Park, Nelson have ended the Car Company division one round robin on 21 points. They picked up five bonus points during the course of the season and remain just four competition points above fifth place Kahurangi, who are on 17, but have a game in hand. But for Kahurangi to leap-frog Nelson they will have to beat Wanderers in the final round and earn a bonus point. Nelson co-coach Kade Heke believes his side has probably done enough. “We’re hoping they get rolled by Wanderers and we go through to the semis, but it’s out of our hands,” says Kade. “It’s going to be a nervous couple of weeks.”

The first games of the second round were played at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. In the Premier 2 game, secondseed Richmond Bombers beat fourth-seed Jacks Pro Netball 51-36. Richmond are a more experienced team and most have played together for a number of years, while Jacks are still working at cementing their combinations. Richmond were without Amanda Springer in the defensive third and they began the game without the services of playmaker and goal attack, Jane Lawson. Jacks pounced on the opportunity and settled more quickly, and were up 9-4 before Richmond found their rhythm to convert six unanswered goals to take a one goal lead at the first break. Jacks goal keep, Jordan Webby was quick to gather

the intercept. She punished the Richmond offence when they attempted to pass the ball across channels. Wing defence, Lavinia Buchanan worked tirelessly on defence and supplied support to bring the ball through court. Tiffany McGill was the workhorse through court and offered stability both on attack and defence. She applied pressure on the outside of the defensive circle and worked to hit the circle edge
on attack to provide quality ball to her shooters. The teams traded goals for the majority of the second quarter before Richmond again scored a flurry of unanswered goals to go into half time with a 24-19 lead. After a slightly shaky start, goal shoot Celeste Friend, found her range to net a number of long range shots. She was ably supported by Nicole Gardner who got through a power of work out

Between the pair they notched up a further five intercepts and were lightening fast to gather the loose ball. Goal defence, Heidi Stewart worked hard to get around her player for the tip ball and with an ounce more luck, could have created turnover ball.

In the Crusaders Schools Competition, The Press Cup, they have suffered just one loss to Christchurch Boys High School and are looking likely to be semifinal contenders. This is something of a new look team with only nine returners from 2013 and also a new coaching and management regime.

Shot putter off to represent NZ The track and field season may have finished for most athletes two months ago, but Dale Pritchard hasn’t been able to put his feet up and relax just yet. The 28 year old thrower has still been busy in the gym and out at the track, as he prepares for the Oceania Track and Field Championships in Rarotonga this week – his first time representing New Zealand. Dale is ranked about third in both discuss and shot put, and says he’s really looking forward to competing in Oceania, where he aims to finish inside the top five in both events. “One of the goals I
had when I very first started athletics was to go on and represent New Zealand, and this will be my first chance to do it,” he says. “For me I just want to finish in the top five, anything above that is good.” Dale has just come off the best season of his career. He reached new personal bests in both shot put (16.31m) and discus (49.67m), broke a truck load of regional records, and won himself his first two national medals; a silver in discus and a bronze in shot put. Dale had an “unlucky” run at nationals previously, finishing fourth place eight times in 12
attempts. But he was more than happy to finally break his curse and finish third in the shot put, behind New Zealand’s bright stars Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill. Tom, who finished third at the World Indoor Championships, and Jacko, a world record holder at junior level, are the two best male shot put throwers New Zealand has produced. But Dale doesn’t see any negatives being stuck in the same generation as the duo. “It makes you prouder to be a New Zealand shotputter, behind that calibre of throwers.” Dale’s first event will begin tomorrow New Zealand-time.

Nelson College off to nationals The Nelson College first XI will head to the New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship. Nelson College booked a spot in the top 16 at the national tournament – which will be held in Napier in September
– by beating Marlborough Boys’ College, Waimea College and Nayland College. The 2-0 victory over Nayland – who also qualified for nationals – means Nelson have reclaimed the Jill Heath Memorial Trophy.

Judo club ready for more members Forty-odd years of flippin' good fun has seen members of the Nelson Judo Club go on to compete all over the world, but its focus this month is on new members. The club has strong numbers in its adult and junior classes but is looking for more during its membership drive. Instructor Brett Grimwood says it’s a great sport for kids who are keen to improve their confidence, coordination or simply want to take the first steps of the Olympic sport. “We have kids from all over Nelson and, because there is no kicking or punching in Judo, a lot of
parents are keen for their kids to get involved.” Judo is all about take downs and throws and the Nelson club has current Oceania champions in its ranks, while Commonwealth Games-bound Mark Brewer used to train at the club’s dojo in the Wakatu Estate. Brett says the club is looking for any adult or kids who are keen to get involved and that the first few sessions are free while people decide if they want to do it. The winter season is now upon us and if you have finished your fishing for the year there are some basic things you should be doing to protect your prized possession for the next few months. If you are not mechanically minded, the safest thing to do is take your boat to the experts and get them to perform a winterization routine on the engine, steering, and electrical components and a once-over of the boat and trailer to ensure they are both safe and sound. There are things, however, that you can look at yourself that don’t require you to be a boat mechanic. Remove squabs and lifejackets to dry storage. Squabs and lifejackets should be washed in fresh water before being stored, as salt deposits will stop them drying out fully and cause mould and mildew to form. Take gadgets, fishing tackle, rods and reels indoors to prevent theft. This is especially important if you store your boat on the street or in a driveway. Plus, your electronic devices like GPS, fish finders and your VHF will fare much better over winter if they are stored somewhere warm and dry. Check the expiry date of your flare kits and top up the first aid kit as necessary. Check that torches, spotlights, cookers, toilets, anchor rope and chain etc are still in good working. Check electrical connections for corrosion. Replace any corroded connections, and cover all connections with a corrosion inhibitor (CRC Lanocote works well) to prevent further damage. Make sure the bilge pumps work. Clean out any ‘gunk’ from strainers and float switches if fitted, and make sure your bilge pump works well, and your batteries can keep up. Keep your batteries charged. Turn off your main battery switch to prevent drain-down, or remove batteries from your boat completely. Make sure you keep your batteries charged – they will lose charge

A quick scrub with a Scotch-brite or wire brush should remove surface rust. While you’re checking for rust, have a look for any loose fittings, particularly on alloy boats, to help prevent rust stains and corrosion caused by dissimilar metals. Apply a rust-killing product where minor corrosion does appear. Check the wheel bearings and bearing buddies, but don’t overfill them with grease. A good idea is to put the boat in the water and give the trailer a thorough once over, as it is much easier to also check the rollers and inside the box framing of the trailer for rust without the boat on it. The last thing your boat probably needs is a thorough clean, inside and out. Apply a nice coat of wax and the job is nearly done. Remember to check the bungs are out, so any water that gets in doesn’t pool in the transom. Finally, cover it up. A good boat cover will help protect your boat from the weather over winter, not to mention the prying eyes of wouldbe thieves.
